Eastern Europe Sports Tours

As seasons pass, sports tour destinations swing in and out of fashion – no more so than in Eastern Europe.  Rather than leave you Googling these touring zones for their unique selling points, we’ve summarised the best of the rest in quick fire fashion to give you the heads up on each zone....

Romania
Prices from £250
Romania Sports Tours

As the capital, Bucharest is the prime tourist destination and cultural centre, with sweeping tree lined boulevards and 19th Century French architecture giving the impression of a miniature Paris.  With an integrated transport network of metro and railway lines, it’s easy to discover the many attractions of the city, from the exotic mix of drinking establishments (Romanian bars sit alongside Irish pubs and Belgian drinking halls), to the many stunning landmarks. The most impressive of these is the Palace of the Parliament, a massive monument to the folly of former dictator Nicolai Ceausescu and a must for sightseers.

Slovakia
Prices from £299
Bratislava Sports Tours

Formerly part of the old Czechoslovakia, the Republic of Slovakia split with the Czech Republic in 1993 and remains the least well known of the two countries. Bratislava is its Capital, an overlooked gem in the region largely due to the popularity of neighbouring destinations like Budapest and Prague. Without the influx of tourists and the inevitable increase in prices, the city remains attractively affordable, with beer as cheap as 50p a pint and a two course meal with drinks at under £5. Bratislava retains a sense of its own culture intermingled with the modernisation that comes from being a (relatively) new member of the EU. Cosmopolitan cafes and traditional Slavic beer halls mix with stark Eastern Bloc architecture and more elegant, classical designs to produce a unique landscape. Based on the banks of the Danube River, the city is just a couple of hours by boat from Vienna in Austria, offering opportunities for a day trip.

Teamlink in the Know:  enquire about a twin-centre trip to Vienna (Austria) as the travel distance between both cities is only one hour.

Hungary
Prices from £252
Budapest Sports Tours

Bisected by the Danube River, visiting teams to Budapest can experience two different environments; the green hills of Buda on one side and the bustling boulevards of Pest on the other. Due to Hungary’s location in Central Europe (it shares borders with seven other countries), visitors to Budapest can take advantage of all of the amenities of a modern western European capital for Eastern European prices.

Teamlink in the Know:  Recover from your sporting exertions with a trip to one of the city’s many thermal baths.  Alternatively, ask about riverboat charters featuring a private bar and on board catering for your team.

Latvia
Prices from £284
Latvia Sports Tours

A hidden touring gem for many years, Riga has largely stayed under the radar with visitors eager to keep the city’s many delights a secret. However, with Latvia rushing headlong from independence to EU membership in a little over a decade, the country has thrown open its doors and the capital is there to be discovered.  Latvians are a traditionally sociable people who like a drink or two (or three!) in warm sociable surroundings. As a result, it’s filled with establishments catering just about every taste, from cosy cellar bars to the hip clubs. Small but perfectly formed, Riga squeezes a surprising amount into a city of less than one million inhabitants. Friendly locals, stunning architecture and strong, cheap beer; it’s all here.

Teamlink in the Know: Ever boarded a beer bike?  If not, Riga can check that box as, in summer, ‘bars on wheels’ transport group around the city on a sightseeing tour with a twist.  Simply take a stool, relax, drink a beer and watch the world go by...all powered by the legs of your guide!

Estonia
Prices from £274
Estonia Sports Tours

In the last decade or so the Estonian capital has gone from Eastern Bloc to New Kid On The Block as far as preferred touring destinations are concerned. Once labelled the “New Prague”, Tallinn has proven so popular with touring teams that anyone who has visited is likely to refer to the next “must visit” resort in the region as the “New Tallinn”. In truth, lazy comparisons do Tallinn little justice; this is a rapidly emerging city combining new development with the charm of the notorious nightlife. True, the ex-Soviet tower blocks are still visible but there are far more eye-catching sights in the city’s Lower Town. It’s here, amongst the cobbled streets and medieval buildings, that the party really gets started with bars (you’ll love the 24 Hour Bar – the clue is in the name) and clubs seemingly tailor-made for sports tour groups.

Teamlink in the Know:  With its close location to the Finnish capital of Helsinki, it’s possible to take a day trip across the Baltic Sea to play a match against Scandinavian opposition before landing back in time to sample Tallinn’s nocturnal attractions.  Alternatively, we can create a twin city tour to commence or conclude in either city, offering two simmering social cultures in one unique tour.

Lithuania
Prices from £288
Lithuania Sports Tours

Despite a reputation as Europe’s most central city, the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius has only become accessible to the average touring group in recent years thanks to the rise of low-cost airlines. More and more people are starting to realise what experienced travellers have known for some time; Vilnius is one of the best nights out in Europe.

Teamlink in the Know:  Located 100km away lays the city of Kaunus, also renowned for its nightlife and suitability for touring teams.  Enquire for prices as you’ll be surprised at how cost effective a tour to Kaunus can be...

Croatia
Prices from £295
Croatia Sports Tours

Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, has the characteristics of an ideal sports tour destination; big enough to have all of the entertainment required by a visiting team yet small enough so that the streets and squares are easily navigated. The medieval Upper Town and the Lower Town are the heart of Zagreb and where most of the sightseeing and entertainment is found. The city’s cobbled streets bear comparison to Budapest and Prague, as do the amount of clubs, casinos, bars and restaurants.

A beach holiday in Croatia probably isn’t the first thing that springs to mind for most tour organisers. Maybe it should be; Split combines the best of both worlds with a picturesque historic centre featuring a Roman palace and a cathedral from the fourth century, and a bustling new town and harbour. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, it is no wonder that Split attracts so many sun seekers in the warmer months.

Teamlink in the Know:  If you’re heading to the coastal town of Split enquire about boat charters to one of the many islands dotted around the stunning coastline.  Many boats cater for groups with an on-board buffet lunch and snorkelling opportunities at scheduled mooring points.
