Gilfach Goch RFC on Tour

In May 2010, 22 men from the small village of Gilfach Goch in South Wales embarked on their eagerly awaited rugby tour to Austin, Texas. Having already toured in Texas some years before, the team had already experienced the vibrant culture and hospitable locals, and were looking forward to going back to the ‘Lone Star State’.

Spirits were high for an early morning start at the clubhouse, and this vibe continued at the airport where the team attracted attention from members of the public interested to know why 22 men had chosen to grow very outdated facial hair!

Upon arrival in Austin, the Gilfach Goch tourists spent little time settling into their hotel before hitting the streets of Texas. Known for its diversity, the city of Austin has a thriving nightlife with over 50 live bands playing every night across the capital. And with all the bars located in a conveniently confined area, the boys from Gilfach made an effort to take in as much live music (and beer!) as they could.

With a generous local crowd turning out to watch Gilfach Goch RFC versus Austin RFC – the pressure was on to impress. The match was also played in memory of a deceased Gilfach club member so it was a sentimental moment for the boys. The game kicked off in great spirits, but unfortunately the 100 degree heat did not favour Gilfach, who eventually lost to a team more acclimatised to the conditions. The after match hospitality was definitely well enjoyed with a traditional Texan drum BBQ and beer flowing well into the evening.
