Wellington School:Italy Tour 2012

We love to hear about your touring experiences in your own words. The following tour report was written by Wellington School who recently returned from their sports tour to Italy

Having already participated in two days of pre-season training at Doonside the boys were keen to start their trip to Italy. Alarms were set to ensure they got to school for a 3:45am departure. Most boys chatted on the bus all the way to Edinburgh airport. Check in was quite smooth at 6:00am and in no time we were boarding the plane to Venice.

On arrival in Venice, we were delighted to board a luxury bus with lots of space and individual leather seats. Our bus journey to Sappada in the Dolomites took about 2.5hrs. Along the way we were greeted with stunning views as the road became more twisty and climbed higher and higher.

Once we arrived in Sappada, we went straight into the dining hall for our first meal before checking in to our rooms. Accommodation was basic but comfortable. The boys were given time to unpack before meeting down at the sports pitch for a two hour training session. We covered passing at pace and recycling during the first session. In the evening the rules of the hotel and the tour were outlined before Mr Brown organised a team-building session.

The following morning we trained for 3 hours covering decision making and attack. In the afternoon we covered set piece and defence. The weather was very hot - about 24-26° C so we stopped for regular hydration breaks.  At the end of the afternoon the boys went swimming for an hour. Some enjoyed the ice baths whilst others were happy to race each other in the pool.  The 2nd day ended with a quiz.

Day 3- after an early breakfast we checked out of our hotel and made our way from Sappada to Venice for the day. Temperatures were now around 30°C. We had our own boat into St Mark’s Square and the boys were given time to visit the tourist landmarks.

To our surprise we were staying in the same 4-star hotel in Treviso as Saracens RFC. The boys managed to get photos with the stars and the school was given a signed rugby shirt for the pavilion.

Day4- Jesola Beach. The temperature on day 4 seemed to rise even higher. The sand was too hot to walk on and sun cream was applied liberally. The boys enjoyed swimming in the sea and spent most of their time hiring pedalos and taking in the sights and sounds of Italian beach life! After a relaxing day at the beach it was down to business in the evening. Our game was against a very strong team whose pitches were beside Treviso RFC stadium. Our forwards battled hard for the whole game trying to get possession for the backs to run at gaps. We picked up a few key injuries that sidelined some boys. Despite the injuries we played well but didn’t manage to break through the big forwards and the strong Italian defence. Despite losing we enjoyed a welcome meal and hospitality in the clubhouse. We returned to the hotel very tired but satisfied that we had played hard rugby.

Day 5 – Home.  Nursing some aches and pains we ate a big breakfast and checked out of our hotel and made our way to the airport. Most of the boys slept either on the plane or bus on the way back to Ayr. We had trained very hard and experienced playing against a very tough Italian team. The weather was excellent as was the hospitality throughout. The boys had a great time and as a team we bonded well together. Now we are back in Scotland and ready to start season 2012-2013.
