South Africa Sports Tours
“The Rainbow Nation” is a premier destination for touring teams of all ages, combining breathtaking scenery, enthralling history and modern facilities in one unique package. Since emerging from apartheid, South Africa has emerged as a world class host of sporting events including the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the 2003 Cricket World Cup and the 2010 Football World Cup.
Visiting teams are guaranteed challenging fixtures in South Africa, where sport is seen less as a pastime and more as a unifying force. Race, language and politics become irrelevant when a national team wins and the Rainbow Nation celebrates as one. This was never more apparent than during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which South Africa won on home turf. Following the final, Nelson Mandela wore the No 6 shirt of team captain Francois Pienaar - a white Afrikaner – and the two shared a heartfelt embrace, a gesture that served to heal old racial wounds across the country and set the tone for the nation’s sporting teams to this day.
The enthusiasm for sport goes right down to grassroots level and unsurprisingly it is the most popular pastimes - rugby and cricket - where the opposition is strongest. That isn’t to say that opposition outside the big two is weak. Football has risen in status over the last decade with South Africa hosting the 2010 World Cup, hockey enjoys a high profile with a broad player base and netball enjoys an excellent coaching set up centered on the Stellenbosch Institute.
South Africa has proved as popular as ever for our clubs and schools in 2011. The Yorkshire Terriers U20 squad enjoyed a 3 week trip to South Africa and Namibia in July, as did Doncaster RFC U17’s. In April The King’s School, Grantham, took an U14+15 squad to Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Dubai, experiencing varying environments and climates...and tough opposition.
Old Northamptonians RFC stole the show in May 2011 with a tour that encompassed coaching sessions with under privileged children in townships / low socio-demographic areas. Mike Rollason, Teamlink’s Sales Manager, accompanied the tour and used his experience to re-shuffle the itinerary on no less than three occasions due to inclement weather in the Western Cape. Tour leader, Mark Kefford, noted in his feedback that “the reward of coaching and providing kit to the townships was, without a doubt, the highlight for most of the tour party. Teamlink went out of their way to ensure we squeezed every possible last little drop of enjoyment out of our time in South Africa. Mike was brilliant and worked hard all week, always a step ahead of the game to ensure everything went to plan after weather constraints made it very difficult. The tour has been described as a life changing experience!

Durban
Prices from £1,267
South Africa’s busiest port, Durban benefits from unique natural and social influences that set it apart from anywhere else in the country. A near tropical climate ensures that the weather - and water that laps at the golden sandy shores - is warm year-round. The lack of variety in the climate is in stark contrast to Durban’s culture. The large Indian population, a hangover from the days of colonial plantations, adds colour to the city, especially at Victoria Street Market where tourist will find all manner of exotic goods.
As a major centre for tourism, Durban has attractions to suit most groups, ranging from the bright lights of the Golden Mile with its restaurants and casinos to the tranquil surrounds of the local surf museum and, for the less squeamish, the snake park. Enquire now
Cape Town
Prices from £1,111
From its beginnings as a stop-off for Dutch trading ships in the 17th Century, Cape Town has grown to become South Africa’s favourite tourist destination. With attractions like the awe-inspiring Table Mountain, the infamous Robben Island and the Cape Peninsular National Park – home to an African penguin colony - it is easy to see why.
Traditional colonial architecture in the foothills gives way to modern buildings and amenities as the coast looms into view, with sandy beaches and a lively harbour. The city is just a stone’s throw away from the famous Cape Winelands, home to some of the world’s best loved vintages. Cape Town also acts as an entry point to the Garden Route, a picturesque stretch of the southern coast that is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Enquire now
Port Elizabeth
Prices from £1,287
Acting as a half-way point between Cape Town and Durban, PE - as the locals call it - is an excellent sports tour destination in its own right. Alongside sandy beaches and excellent water sports, groups will get a hearty welcome in what is reputedly South Africa’s friendliest city.
Away from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, it’s worth taking advantage of the year round temperate weather and seeing some of the amazing wildlife. Port Elizabeth is the gateway to the game reserves of the Eastern Cape with the chance to spot the Big Five – Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo – in their natural habitat. Enquire now
