Bedlinog RFC: San Diego & Las Vegas Rugby Tour
Aside from the Barbarians, Bedlinog RFC must be up there with the world's most seasoned tourists. After conquering the majority of North America since their inception in 1974, The Foxes packed their bags full of customised Canterbury stash and boarded their British Airways flight to San Diego.
Passengers seeking an ambient 11 hour jaunt were treated to a continued chorus of Welsh hymns, fuelled by the excellent hospitality afforded by the nation's flag carrying airline. Led by Teamlink's managing director, Mark Gardner, a veteran of 101 tours (his fourth with Bedlinog), The Foxes settled in immediately to the coastal city known for its welcoming hospitality amid The Gaslamp Quarter. 200 bars, clubs and restaurants nestled amongst a 12 block party zone ensured a good time was had by all.
Relaxing at the San Diego Hilton Bayfront Hotel's outdoor pool, golfing at Balboa Park, partying at The Hard Rock Hotel's 'Intervention' Sunday club, watching the LA Dodgers in live baseball action and checking out the stars' luxury Hollywood homes were a handful of activities that kept the players and staff entertained ahead of their opening tour game vs North County Gurkhas. In stifling heat the hosts pulled off a shock victory by 29-19 against their experienced visitors. The loss dented pride but not singing voices as Calon Lan ricocheted around the walls of the hosts' clubhouse, undoubtedly assisted by the 7.5% IPA home brew steaming out of jugs presented by our US hosts.
As endorphins raced through the veins of the 50-strong party it was time to top out on a high. Las Vegas' Monte Carlo Hotel lay in wait for the final 5 days, tempting the boys into the waters of its continual pool party from dawn till dusk. Many took in the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam by helicopter - some even opting for the champagne lunch upgrade - whilst others found their perch in the numerous casinos...with mixed success.
There are many ways to enjoy rugby tours to the USA. If you want to go big and live the dream then follow The Foxes' example and get yourself on a rugby tour to San Diego and Las Vegas.
