The AGC Women’s FA went on tour to Lisbon, Portugal. They had the chance to enjoy the Benfica Stadium and an always necessary shopping trip, even if a little tired from the previous nights activities. The AGC team experienced their first training session at the Jamor Sports Centre which went extremely well and gave the team a lot to think about for their first fixture.
The team were thrown in at the deep end for their first match as they played the best women’s team in Portugal; 1º Dezembro. This side unfortunately proved too strong for the AGC players who never quite got to grips with the game due to the limited time that the team have trained together.
However on a brighter note their day at Sporting Lisbon went extremely well with both players and coaches gaining a lot from the experienced staff and the facilities. Sporting Lisbon is a world class training facility, (Academia Sporting in Alcochete), which accommodated Portugal during the Euro 2004 competition and has now welcomed the AGC women's team. The AGC team went to the academy for a dedicated training session and had the opportunity to experience football in the professional ranks as they were put through their paces with the Sporting training staff. Sporting boast a new stadium Estádio José Alvalade, built for the UEFA Euro 2004 championship with a capacity to hold 50,049 spectators which the AGC had the chance to tour around.
The AGC were then given the opportunity to face in their second fixture which proved to be an unlucky match for the AGC side as they missed a penalty and hit the post twice in the first half, unfortunately this combination meant that the AGC team once again missed out on a victory.
Nevertheless it was not all hard work for the team as they have had plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the pool and the nearby beaches.
